Advent Meditation: God Speaks Through Dreams

This Christmas I’ve published a 25-Day devotional, one for each day in December. Each one is drawn from the scripture, because even though these holiday stories are familiar, they are still the word of God to us, capable of teaching and guiding us through life. And because the burden of Christmas makes us busier and more prone to stress, each meditation is designed to be read in a minute--and provide something to consider all day long.

The eBook is available over at Amazon.com

How God Speaks:

DAY EIGHTEEN

God speaks through dreams: The record shows that God spoke to Joseph exclusively through dreams. What’s more, Joseph took these dreams seriously and made life-altering choices based on them. Would you marry someone or move to a foreign country based on your dreams? Joseph did! In fact, we are in the habit of referring to "our dreams," but what if they are God’s? Dreams are mentioned no fewer than four times in Matthew’s Christmas narrative. The scripture demonstrates God can and does guide his children through dreams. Imagine: in an emotionally charged situation like the Nativity, just when we would be tempted to ignore our dreams as a product of our subconscious, God is present: leading, directing, and guiding—through dreams.

Ray, I completely agree that God speaks to us through dreams, and accept that I prefer not to be labeled as overly "mystical" I have no trouble sharing my own such experiences to appropriate audiences. True: God speaks through dreams, and not only to believers. Not true: all dreams are messages from God. As always, compare the message with God's written word.

I'm on board with your distinction, Ed: not all dreams are from God. Re-reading the devotion, I can see where you might interpret it that way. But I'm with you!

Thank goodness not all dreams are from God. And thank you God for the wisdom to know the difference! I've had many God dreams...and listened and didn't. Which is one of the ways he teaches us.

Agreed, Peggy. But in my experience, most North Americans consign dreams to the their own sub-conscious, and never even pause to consider the Source (or sources). Peace to you!

As an "incredibly busy" person (aren't we all?) who loves your insights and writing, I'm very excited about this devotional! (Also, the teaching at our church Sunday was about dreams, so now I'm *really* thinking about this aspect of how God speaks to us...)

I was unjustly arrested and jailed by the Newark, NJ police as a suspect for the 1993 car bombing of the WTC. I languished there for over six months beaten-up by inmates and losing my mind. I later returned to India--my home country. Four days before 9/11 the Lord showed me in a dream how two men were flying in mid-air by themselves with me and as they were about to ram into buildings, i tried to stop them. But it was too late. They rammed into the buildings one after another. And then i saw the largest fire in my life engulfing people. I saw five inside the flames moving around. The fire was so ghastly it woke me up. I saw the time and it was around 4 AM. I did not tell the nonsensical dream to anyone because it was about men flying in midair. Four days later i saw the dream come true, except that the two men were flying inside planes.
